In progressFinished pieceSuccessesDifficultiesA difficulty I had was definitely trying to layer on the paper mache to make it smooth. It was hard to make each layer even and trying to get all the paper towels to stick down to the piece. That was my biggest struggle. I also wish I could have made a better color for the dogs fur. I was trying to create a yellow lab but it was a bit too yellow and needed it be toned down. Installation artInstallation art is an artistic genre of three dimensional works that are often site specific and designed to transform the perception of a space.

In progressInspirationI got the idea for my sgraffito piece from just the idea of flowers. I wanted to have a lot of flowers in my piece because I just think it represents sgraffito well. Flowers tell a good story so that is where my inspiration came from. I got my idea from making flowers abstract. I added the flowers and then just a lot of abstract elements to complete my design. ProcessThe process of my piece started with using clay to make a coil cup. I did the coils and smoothed them down to the cup. After I let it dry to leather hard and glazed it with the dark blue glaze. I then carved in my sgraffito design. Finished pieceProcessFor the process of my sgraffito piece I started by making a clay coil piece. After coiling it then smoothing it i let it dry to leather hard. I then glazed it and made my sgraffito design. Next my cup went into the kilm and was fired. After firing I put on clear glaze and it was fired again to finish. What did I think of the process? The sgraffito process was very straightforward and pretty easy. I liked that we glazed it and put the design on before firing it because I think it made the process a bit easier. It was kind of challenging to put the design in the cup but all around I didn’t have trouble with it. successes/changesI believe my piece was successful because I was able to create a nice piece that came out looking like it was supposed to. I really liked my design and the dark blue color i used. If I were to change it I would work on making my piece smoother. Coiling is a little challenging trying to make the piece smooth so I might try to make it on the wheel or work on my coiling.
This is my project in progress. My plans for this project are to use this base of the whole shape of the elephant and ad layer onto it. I want 3 layer added into the head, 2 on the face, and one on the trunk. I want to add small details onto the elephant so it isn’t bland and will bring it all together. I am finding success in this piece because I am able to figure out exactly how I want it to look and what I want to do with it which makes it easier to bring the ideas to life. I am finding difficulty in cutting the shapes just right because the cardboard can be difficult to work with.
Art criticism process A. Describe the artwork- What do you see in the art, which art elements, color schemes B. Analyze the artwork-art elements and design principles, color, value, line, shape/form, texture, space, balance, emphasis C. interpret the artwork- What is the mood, what feeling/ideas represented, what story is being told D. Judge the artwork- What do you think of the artwork, is it successful, support with evidence Art criticism project critique My lino-cut printmaking project was the project I am most proud of from this semester. In this piece there is a simple barn, silo, tree, and fence shown. The color scheme of this piece was just a single color which is bright red because the traditional barn is bright red. This piece has a smooth texture because it is ink on paper and brings together a great unity. The original sketch had had harsh lines so while brainstorming there had to be a way for me to tone it down and make it a simpler piece so it wouldn't be so abstract. For that reason I took away a lot of details for my final piece because I was looking for simplicity. This piece is a open composition piece because no single thing stands out they all work together to make up the picture as w whole. The eyes could be easily drawn to any part of this piece. The theme of this piece is of course farming but also has a backup theme of landscape and portrait because it shows the outdoors and a whole portrait of the farm. The mood of this is definitely peaceful and happy. A simple farm with trees and grass would definitely make anybody smile and want to take a trip out to the country. This piece could also make anybody because many people have childhood memories and beyond on farms which makes it a classical piece. Farms can be a more simpler piece so the creativity isn't very strong. A old farming story or growing up story is told through this piece with its simplicity and nostalgic look. I think this art is very successful because it tells a a colorful story. this piece could add some texture and bumpy lines because it it very simple and also add more colors that wouldn't typically be seen in a farm painting. This piece does have a very clean great bright look. Questions1. What is art? Art is any interpretation or medium of something expressed by and individual. Art can be expressed all kinds of ways through music, drawing, painting, dancing, and filming. Art is different with every single person and what one artist does could be very different than another. One artist could draw a butterfly dark and grey, but another artist could paint the same thing colorful. Art is all the music we listen to and all the dances we see. Art can be anything we want it to be. For my photos I chose my portrait pictures because I had a hard time deciding what medium to do. In the beginning I wanted to just do a pencil sketch but eventually I decided to make the piece the complete opposite and add tons of color to it. This shows that even though I chose to go colorful I could easily have kept it a pencil drawing and both are art interpreted differently. 2. What is artistic style? Artistic style is what a certain artist primarily does or uses in all of their artwork. An artistic style may be watercolor, clay, or acrylic paint. The artistic style can also be something such as painting about dogs, sculpting your families faces, or stitching all the butterflies you see in the world. Artists like to stay in a specific range and idea when it comes to their art but if they don't then their style could be no style in particular. Artistic style is all about what the artist commonly does with their work. As an artist I see my artistic style clearly. I paint, draw, and sculpt about the outdoors in almost all of my projects. These are a few of my projects where I took whatever medium we were working with and turned it into something about the outdoors. I have a personal passion for the outdoors with my love for hunting, fishing, animals, and being outside which I noticed reflected on my artwork. 3. What was the warm up or sketchbook assignment you learned the most from? The sketchbook assignment I learned the most from was the acrylic painting brush techniques. I learned alot from this assignment because as the semester went on we painted a lot and whenever I had the freedom to do an assignment I would paint. Because of this assignment I got the feel of how every brush painted, correct techniques, and just how to get comfortable with those things. I tested a variety of brush techniques in this warmup and I think that made me really excell more and more with painting as I did it often in the semester. I have tried out most of the brushes in the front of class and have looked back on this assignment to see which brushes were best for me and how they all painted. My warmup This is a piece of artwork I used acrylic paint and brushes with as well as the techniques from the warm up. This turned out to be one of my favorite pieces.
in progress Finished piece Printmaking piece For this piece I decided to make my own. I took the image from the lino-cut printmaking project and I decided to draw it on watercolor paper and paint it with watercolor. I really like painting with watercolor and this is my favorite project I have done so I decided to recreate it. I added several more colors and was able to sketch it cleaner than when using lino-cut. If I were to do this piece again I would most likely try to make the drawing a bit cleaner and explore with the watercolors more.
Full image Detail shot I used 5 different mediums and had 5 different layers. My first layer was an acrylic paint background which I painted with red and white. My second layer was white acrylic paint stencilimg which I used to write out USA, and AMERICA. My third layer was pen which I used to draw stars, fireworks, and write "July 4th" and "Freedom". My final layer was two different mediums combined which were colored pencil, and glued on paper. I created and American flag and red heart with the paper and colored pencil. My word was America. I portrayed this by using red, white, and blue. I added stars, fireworks, and a picture of the flag. I also wrote "July 4th" and "freedom" to portray the American theme.
In progress Finished piece Most helpful watercolor warmup- Watercolor technique Most helpful perspective warmup- perspective drawing For this project I used first point perspective. This photo was taken on my dirt driveway where I like. My driveway is long and surrounded by trees so it was very easy to take a perspective phot of it The most diffucult part of this project was getting the original picture drawn correct on the paper that got traced. Drawing perspective can be a failure if you don't do it a certain way and that took me a while to do. The most helpful watercolor warmup for me was helpful because it showed me how watercolor really works when I use it with a brush. If I had not known how it felt before I started my project I would have messed up more. The most helpful perspective warmup for me was helpful because I got to see how you use perspective to make the drawing. I was able to draw something I didn't think I could draw by usung perspective.
in progress finished I did a portrait of fitz who is my boyfriend. the medium I used was pencil and prisms colored pencil. My process start to finish was very simple. I started by drawing out everything with pencil, getting all the face structures right and everything just the way I liked it. Next I just put different colors in different places wherever I felt. I didn't plan out the coloring of this I just did it randomly. The things I found successful about my piece were all of the color and the size of the piece. All of my colors worked really well together and looked very good. Also the entirety of the head and body fit very well on the page. One thing I would want to fix if I did this again if the facial features. The facial features didn't turn out terrible, but I would like to fix them up, make them more even, and try to make them more accurate.
eye nose mouthears face proportion hair gesture drawing blind contour skeleton cartoon The gesture drawing helped me the most with my portrait piece because it helped me out a lot with figuring out shape. When I had to quickly draw a shape it helped my brain figure it out and find the right shape. I though it was fun and interesting to draw all of the different positions and definitely helped me. The thing I found most surprising about the facial proportions was that a face is five eyes wide. I never realized that our faces were that wide.
After finishing the firing of my piece I got it back and decided not to glaze it. Instead of glaze I decided to paint my piece with acrylic paint to make it more colorful. By using glaze ware but not glaze my piece got a bit of shine but I could still use lots of color. When the piece was finished it was all hardened and sealed to bring all the color and clay finally together. This happened right after I fired my piece for the last time and all my color and shine came together when fired. I thought my piece was very successful in its colors and the design on the piece. The red and yellow colors that I picked to go together looked very vibrant and beautiful. I wanted be piece to be bright and yellow on the sunshine part but darker on all other parts to compliment it. I thought the design I chose worked really well with these colors so all around that is why I believe my piece was successful. If I were to do this project again I think the main thing I would do is make my box another shape. I thought the box would be the best for me but looking at my project now I think it would've looked better rounder. Mimicking the sun with a round shape would have looked better as well as adding a sun on the lid as a handle.
